Full Description
A large irregular post medieval extractive pit up to 117m long by up to 70m wide to the west of Forest Hill, Sturminster Marshall, is visible as an earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs [1]. The pit is within an area of sand, silt and clay geology. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project. The area is now under 20th century housing development.
