Monument record MDO45553 - Post medieval extractive pits, Sturminster Marshall

An area of post medieval extractive pits surrounding Crumpet's Farm, Sturminster Marshall, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs and on Environment Agency lidar imagery. The cluster of pits follow a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

An area up to 815m long by up to 415m wide of post medieval extractive pits surrounding Crumpet's Farm, Sturminster Marshall, are visible as earthworks on on 1940s aerial photographs and on Environment Agency lidar imagery [1-5]. The cluster of pits follow a southwest to northeast running seam of sand, clay and gravels. Some additional pits within the vicinity are documented on the OS 1st Edition map and are variously clay, sand, gravel or chalk pits, reflecting the variable geology of the area. The seam of pits continues northeast into Corfe Mullen Parish (MDO45552). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
