Full Description

A chipped flint axe 9 1/2 ins long, 3 1/2 ins. at its greatest width, found in a field adjoining the Pitt-Rivers Museum, FARNHAM [Classifiable as Ne from illustration]. <1>

No further information was obtained about this axe. The area where the axe may have been found is too great to warrant other than a marginal siting. <2>

[NGD note 15-02-23: The NRHE database gives this findspot’s location as Farnham but the coordinates provided on the HER map (399500 114500) come out in Gussage St Michael. The NRHE database's description says the find was “found in a field adjoining the Pitt-Rivers Museum, FARNHAM” but the coordinates come out approximately 3.7km to the east of Elham House (the building that used to house the museum at Farnham). As the coordinates provided are likely to be incorrect the coordinates used to record this MDO number are centred on Elham House's grounds and are given as 395750 114590 but it should be remembered that it was found in a field adjoining the museum, that the findspot is not precisely known and that Pitt-Rivers estate was substantial.]
