Full Description

Two large slabs of limestone covering a shallow chalk-cut cist were discovered, circa 1830, a little north of Langton House (ST 90240562) during the removal of a bank on the side of a hill near the River Stour, for the purpose of making a plantation. Within the cist were an adult male inhumation and a child, lying east-west. At the head and feet were fragments of three "British" urns, accompanied by bones of a horse and dog. Other finds were various pottery sherds including red samian ware, glass, an iron spearhead and a spur or stirrup; part of the rowel being attached ot it. <1-2>

An inhumation in a cist north of Langton House might be Roman, since samian sherds were found nearby. <3>
