Monument record MDO45514 - Ring ditch on Ogden Down, Gussage St Michael

Please read our .

Summary

A ring ditch on Ogden Down discovered during excavations in 1990-1 aimed at locating the southern end of the timber avenue of MDO40185. The ring ditch was found to be just 7 metres in diameter. Post holes of the avenue continued up to the ring ditch MDO45514 but did not continue beyond it. The timber avenue of MDO40185 is almost certainly of Later Bronze Age date, but a transverse arrowhead from near the base of the ring ditch MDO45514 suggests that the latter might be of Late Neolithic origin. The base of an urned cremation of Middle Bronze Age date was found near the southeast edge of the mound that formerly accompanied the ring ditch MDO45514, and clearly represented a secondary burial.
