Full Description

(Area centred ST 802087) Mr. Loader of Earls Farm, Belchalwell Street had a box full of Romano-British pottery, which he had picked up on the down and on the slope from the down to his farm. Site not visited. <1-2>

Area centred at ST 800086. The pottery was picked up over a long period and occurred in rabbit scrapes etc., mainly between the parish boundary and the 700 ft. contour. The box full referred to above is packed away and not readily accessible <3.1>. The area indicated by Mr. Loader is rough pasture downland, mostly a north-west facing slope. A few very small sherds were found during investigations in old rabbit scrapes and mole casts.

The pottery seen in the possession of Mr. Loader was mainly of Romano-British type, a little grey ware, and much of thick coarse brown ware. There were no rims or bases. Two fragments of black hand made ware resembled Iron Age 'C' pottery. <3>
