Full Description
Recent aerial photography reveals the cropmarks of a probable Prehistoric or Roman round barrow cemetery, comprising at least six round barrows: three ring ditches visible as an east-west line at ST 971 057 and a second line of three at ST 973 055-ST 973 056. Also visible, by this second line, is a small U-shaped curvilinear enclosure, at ST 972 056. <1>
A probable Bronze Age round barrow is visible as a sub-circular ring ditch cropmark to the east of West Hemsworth, Witchampton, on a 2019 aerial photograph <2>. The feature comprises a ring ditch of approximately 14m diameter. A second larger ring ditch located immediately to the west (MDO45428) may form a pair with this one. They may be part of a larger barrow group, all positioned in pairs. The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
