Full Description

Recent aerial photography reveals the cropmarks of two linear features, possibly forming a trackway of uncertain date, visible from ST 973 056 to ST 971 059. <1>

Linear cropmarks are visible to the east of Hemsworth, Witchampton, on a 1996 aerial photograph <2>. The features comprise two slightly curvilinear parallel ditches, just over 250m in length and running SW-NE, which may be part of a trackway of uncertain date (also recorded under NRHE Hob UID 1079978). A further right-angled linear ditch on a SW-NE alignment to the north of this possible trackway may be contemporary, possibly a further trackway or alternativel an associated field boundary.

The features overlie, and presumably post-date, a Bronze Age barrow cemetery and a later prehistoric field system, so could date anywhere between the later prehistoric and post-medieval periods. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
