Monument record MDO45302 - Field system, Tarrant Hinton

Please read our .

Summary

Part of a later prehistoric and / or Roman field system, of the form often referred to as a "Celtic" field system, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s but have subsequently been levelled by ploughing. The site comprises three parallel linear banks that extend roughly WSW / ENE for a maximum of 98m. The banks each measure between 7.5m and 10m wide and are circa 19m apart. They probably define a pattern of conjoined but incomplete rectangular fields but have a different orientation to similar "Celtic" field systems identified in the area (eg ST 90 NE 11). They appear to be overlain by the linear dyke recorded as ST 91 SE 206 suggesting they are earlier.
