Full Description

St. Mary's Church: The list of Rectors records three names only, between the years 1308 and 1316.

A little beyond St. Mary Lane is a house with a pointed stone arch, which by a combination of circumstances is believed to have been the door of St. Mary's Church. If the building was not standing in 1476, its site was known and is not mentioned in a court leet. It is not clear how, but the rectory was united to St John's Church before 1348. <1>

Willis's plan of Shaftesbury - 1615 shows St. Mary Lane centred at ST 85982285.

Neither the doorway referred to in Authy <1> nor any other remains of St. Mary's Church was found during field investigation. <2>

St. Mary's Church, possibly first mentioned in 1302, was gone by 1500. <3>
