Summary

The antiquarian Charles Warne reported that Roman tiles and plaster were found when the church was restored, and that he himself had found 'fragmental remains' in the field between the village and Castle Hill. He concluded that a Roman villa was located somewhere in the vicinity. Visits by Ordnance Survey fieldworkers found no evidence.

Full Description

Site of a "Roman villa" found not far from the church, and when the church was restored Roman tiles and plaster were found built into it, Warne himself found R. "fragmental remains" in the field between the village & his "Castra" 1/3 mile to NE [i.e. Castle Hill). <1>

"I have no knowledge of a Roman building, found in Cattistock". The church was restored in AD 1857. <2>

No information was obtained, concerning this building, from enquiries made locally and no remains were observed incorporated into the structure of the church. <3>
