Summary

The remains of a medieval stone cross comprising a base formed from two steps and a plinth with chamfered corners, into which is set the base of a shaft. This cross probably dates to the early fourteenth century.

Full Description

A cross, standing on what was once Okeford Fitzpaine village green, consists of two steps with a socket stone about 3 feet square and 1 3/4 feet deep. The square set shaft has been sawn off level with the base. Probably early 14th century. <1>

ST 80631092 The remains of Okeford Fitzpaine Medieval Village cross consists of a worn base of two massive steps, the lower being 2.4m square x 0.4m high with a chamfered plinth, and the upper 1.8m x 1.6m x 0.2m high; supporting a socket stone 0.9m x 0.8m x 0.55m high, which is square to octagonal with broached corners. The sawn-off cross shaft base, 0.35m square, remains visible.

A plaque set on the north side of the steps, records that the cross was renovated in 1953.

‘(4) CROSS, remains, 160 yds. N.W. of (1), are of ashlar and comprise a chamfered plinth and two square steps on which rests an octagonal cross-base, chamfered on top and with broach stops occupying the corners of th e square. The tenon of the cross-shaft still lodges in a square mortice at the centre of the octagon, but the rest has gone.’
