Summary

A purpose built hospital constructed in 1915 replacing a dispensary which had been established at the Industrial School in 1867 later accompanied by the opening of a 3 bed hosptial in 1868. The hospital moved to a house in North Allington in 1870 but later outgrew this site. In 1912 a fund was opened to raise money for construction of a hospital on a new site on land donated by Colonel Colfox. A competition was held in 1913 to select a design for the building. The architects brief for the competition included two general wards - one male and one female, each containing eight beds, two private wards, a sanitiary spur, a nurses duty room or ward kitchen, an operating room, outpatients department and administrative department. The later was to include matron's and nurses' rooms and servants facilities.Thirty three entries were submitted and the winning design was by F.H Shayler and E.R Bill. Construction started in 1914 and was completed in 1915. The design comprised a H-shaped on plan building with a two-storey administrative department at the centre, with wards in the south arm, out patients on the north and east, and staff accomodation on the west. It was built of red brick with pebble-dashed walls and slate roofs. A children's ward and a maternity ward were added to the hospital in 1931, on land donated by Colonel Colfox. The new extension accommodated six child patients, two maternity patients and four extra female cases, expanding total accommodation to eight men, 12 women, two maternity patients, six children, and two private wards. In 1996 the hospital closed, replaced by a new hospital Bridport Community Hospital in Hospital Lane. The site was sold and developed for housing which involved demolition of the hospital buildings.
