Full Description
A probable Post Medieval chalk pit is visible as a soilmark on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9587 0923 and comprises a linear quarry and an associated spoil heap. The quarry measures a maximum of 58m long by up to 13m wide and is orientated west / east. The spoil heap extends along the northern side and is slightly narrower. <1>
A post medieval chalk pit is visible to the east of Tarrant Monkton as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs and current Environment Agency lidar imagery <2-4>. The feature comprises an elongated oval pit 42m long by 19m wide. The presence of a possible spoil heap is recorded uncer NRHE Hob UID 1479144 but this may be alternatively part of a linear bank associated with a later prehistoric field system (MDO45135). The feature was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
