Full Description

Preserved corn mill, probably built in the 18th century with later alterations. The building is roughly symmetrical plan, with side-by-side wheel chambers in the centre and a 19th century brick front elevation. The corn mill is of 2 storeys and 2 bays with intact machinery to the left, powered by an in situ wheel. The flax mill to right, is of 2 storeys and 2 bays, the machinery and wheel have been removed but it retains evidence of the power system. The building has a continuous roof of 18th century timber trusses. A house of 2 + 1 storeys with 2 bays, is attached to the west end of the corn mill. The corn mill contains typical 19th century milling machinery powered by an iron wheel. The attic of the flax mill is open to the corn mill. Evidence of former use; the ground floor formerly contained heavy longitudinal shaft driven from wheel shaft, probably above ground level. Scrape marks on central beam indicate this shaft drove a wheel of approximately 5 feet diameter. Also cast-iron shaft box for later shaft up-stream, possibly related to the addition of a drive from a ring gear. The waterwheel has been removed, it was probably about 7 feet wide and 18 feet in diameter. The rear wall has a wide blocked opening in the centre with a brick relieving arch, this is possibly not original to the building. <2>
