Full Description
'Stapleford' is first mentioned in the 1244 Assize for Dorset. <1>
(ST 5300 Stapleford DMV sited from OS 10000 and Auth. 2)
Hutchins says that "Stapleford is supposed to have been the ancient village of Hooke, but it seems rather to have been a district parish long since included in Hooke. Here was ancently a church or chapel." In th elate C13th it was granted the right to hold a fair and market. The village is distinctly biportite, and it seems likely that Hooke Court (ST 50 SW 9) built circa 1400 marks the site of the old settlement of Stapleford. <2>
