Full Description

Field systems. Taken from Air photos in Jan-March 1949., 1>

A (ST 78089985) B (ST 77850125) C (ST 78050012). A. Celtic fields in the form of large platforms defined by heavy scarps banked on the inside forming fields of irregular shapes. B. RCHM extension, fields plainly visible. C. An irregular shaped mound. A sunken lane crosses the area of A but it is obviously later than the fields. <2>

Centred at ST 781007. An extensive field system of Iron Age/Romano- British type, visible on air photographs. Most of the area is arable, and the system has been so ploughed that except for areas A and B, mentioned above, the lynchet and field banks are poorly defined and scattered. In the areas at A and B fairly well defined small irregular fields are visible under grass. The area about C was under crops when investigated, and the mound mentioned in Authy 2 was not seen. <3>

Aerial photographs taken in 2015 as part of the Historic England Reconnaissance Recording programme show a number of the boundaries making up the northern part of the field system described above, particularly to the south-east of Newton Farm centred at ST 7783 0149, visible as earthwork banks. <4>
