Monument record MDO44492 - Possible late prehistoric enclosures south-west of Honeycombe Wood, Lillington

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of two possible later prehistoric enclosures can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2010. These two joined enclosures are situated at the south-western end of Honeycombe Wood. The northern enclosure appears to be an oblong aligned north-south, though only the southern part is visible and the remainder is within the wood. The second enclosure is joined to this. It is more rectangular in shape and is aligned east-west. Cropmarks visible at this location on 2020 Google Earth imagery appear to correspond with removed field boundaries shown on the OS Epoch 1 6" to the mile map published in 1887, are visible on a 1947 aerial photograph and which are still extant on a 1972 aerial photograph. The features might alternatively be medieval to post-medieval field boundaries, now removed.

Full Description

The cropmarks of two possible later prehistoric enclosures can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2010. These two joined enclosures are situated at the south-western end of Honeycombe Wood. It is more rectangular in shape and is aligned east-west. <1>

Cropmarks visible at this location on 2020 Google Earth imagery appear to correspond with removed field boundaries shown on the OS Epoch 1 6" to the mile map published in 1887 and which are still extant on a 1972 aerial photograph. A 1947 aerial photograph shows the extant boundaries as double banked with trackways alongside. This might alternatively suggest the possible later prehistoric enclosures are medieval to post-medieval fields - there are indications of possible ridge and furrow present on the 1947 aerial photograph. (OS 1887; RAF 1947; DC 1972).
