Full Description

ST 86282296. "in 1790 the Town Hall or New Guildhall as it was then called, stood on five arches in the corn market on the north side of St. Peter's Church. It was built by Edmund Bower about 1578". The present Guildhall was erected in 1827, to the west of St. Peter's Church. (Sited from building depicted on N. side of church but not described, in the plan of 1615 in Hutchins Vol.3 1868. This siting is confirmed by the 1799 plan in the earlier edition, where the building is shewn and described as Town Hall). (1-2)

The site falls in the centre of the High Street and no visible trace of the building remains.<3>
