Full Description
ST 88851980 to ST 89322005. Extending for about 500.0 m over the steep north west facing slope of Melbury Down are four contour and cross-contour strip lynchets of probable medieval date. The well preserved turf-covered lynchets vary in height from 2.0 m on the higher slope to 6.0 m on the lower, and are of average 5.0 m in width. Scrub is now encroaching over the south west end of the system. When viewed from about 1 km to the north the 'swirling' nature of these lynchets is very impressive. Located during field investigation. Visible on OS air photographs. <1>
