Full Description

A prehistoric or Roman enclosure is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It is defined by ditches enclosing an area measuring 21m by 24m centred ar ST 5929 1527. The south east facing side is convex. A number of pits in the vicinity of the enclosure could be archaeological or geological in origin. Cropmarks of numerous linear features crossing the enclosure, and the whole of the field, are geological in origin. These are particularly clear on the photographs listed in source 1.

The cropmarks were interpreted and mapped during an English Heritage project on a nearby Roman Camp. All available aerial photographs of this area were examined, including those from the NMR, online sources, and the local HER. Near by, there is a possible Roman villa site, known from excavation and finds, and other finds, ranging in date from the Neolithic through to the Roman period, have been recovered from the field. <1>
