Full Description
A socket stone situated in a field behind the barn of Manor Farm, Tarrant Hinton, is thought to be from a wayside cross said to have stood formerly at the cross-roads in the village (ST 938104), still known as Hinton Cross.
The socket is octagonal above, converted to square below by broaches which are carved in the centre with 'claws' similar to those on the bases of the pillars in the parish church (ST 91 SW 79). It measures 2ft.11 ins square and is 1ft.5ins deep.
Bedded into the socket are the remains of a shaft cut off clean to the face of the socket. Both are of green sandstone similar to that of which the church tower is built, and it is suggested that the cross is of about the same date as the church, possibly circa 1180AD. <1>
The socket stone, situated at ST 93921084, is as described above and stands 0.6m. Above ground level. See photograph. <2>
