Monument record MDO44087 - Elizabethan manor house at Boveridge, Cranborne

Documentary records show that Richard Collier of 'Boridge in Cranborne' left six pounds in a will proved in 1595 towards the erection of a church or chapel at Boveridge, and a chapel of ease is recorded there in 1650. Local tradition identifies the site of the chapel as being near Boveridge Farm, but fragments of building material observed on the site seem to be relatively modern.

The old mansion of the HOOPERS which stood near the present farm-house [listed under the manor & tithing of BOVERIDGE] was pulled down about the beginning of this century when a handsome modern residence was erected further to the east by HENRY BROUNCKER. The manor was held by JOHN HOOPER. 14 ELIZ. <1>

[SU 0630 1499] I do not know the exact site but a fragment of brick walling recently exposed may be part of it. <2>

The walling exposed is too small to allow the drawing of any conclusion as to its age or purpose. Although it probably is part of
a building, it could be part of a wall which served other purposes. <3>

Domesday records that the Church of ST. MARY in CRANBOURNE held BOVERIDGE. 1517: Manor was held by Richard Jansen from the Abbot of TEWKESBURY & CRANBORNE. The 'Survey of Cranborne Abbey' in 1552 shows that Thos. JOHNSON held the tithes of BOVERIDGE, by indenture. 1572. The Estate of BOVERIDGE was held by John HOOPER. 1607. BOVERIDGE was included in the Manor of CRANBORNE given to Robert, Earl of SALISBURY. 1825. The Estate became the property of the BROUNCKER family. (4)

The walling mentioned in T.2. & 3 is in plan a T-shaped junction of walls, each 'wing' being about 1.0m long and 1.0m high. Composed of standard sized bricks with modern cementing, the walls are probably contemporary with the farmhouse (19thc.).
From T.1. the Manor house is assumed to be Elizabethan. The site could not be located with any certainty, but may lie in the area immediately west of BOVERIDGE FARM, an area covered by terraced lawns and woodland. (5)
