Full Description

In an old book belonging to the mayor of SALISBURY it appears that, 1396, J THORNBORN gave a legacy to the church of ST NICHOLAS de EDMUNDESHAM, and also to the church of ST QUINTIN there. 29 ELIZ - a chapel here called ST QUINTIN'S, with 6 acres of land, was granted to CHARLES BAGEHOTT. It afterwards belonged to LORD SHAFTESBURY and now, (1869) is the property of HECTOR MONRO. The mansion house has been taken down for many years. <1>

I am a direct descendant of the HECTOR MONRO referred to and I have never heard of ST QUINTIN'S nor does the statement "the mansion house has been taken down for many years" make sense to me for the mansion house is surely the present EDMONDSHAM HOUSE [Dorset 16SW 19]. I have deeds dating back to 1392 which mention the church at EDMONDSHAM but they probably refer to ST NICHOLAS' church which is still in use, and the North aisle of which has always been reckoned as the property of my forefathers - the MONRO'S & HUSSEYS. Without serious search into my documents - which I am not prepared to do - I can add no more. <2>

The Rector of Edmondsham knew nothing of ST QUINTIN'S. <3>
