Full Description
Cropmarks representing a possible small long barrow are visible on air photographs taken 15 April 2002. The cropmarks appear to represent two short but substantial parallel lengths of ditch. Their width appears irregular along their length and both curve outwards slightly. They are a maximum of circa 13 metres apart and aligned NW-SE. They both appear to curve inwards slightly at the NW end. Maximum length is circa 18 metres, and maximum (external) width is circa 17 metres. As such, if they do represent the flanking ditches of a long barrow then it is a very short example, although the first phase of Wayland's Smithy is similar in both form and size. <1> <2>
The potential site of a Neolithic oval or long barrow is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs to the north of Park Lane, Shapwick <1>. It appears as an incomplete oval enclosure 15m wide and at least 20m long with a possible gap on the northwest side. It was digitally recorded during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M Project.
