Summary

A Post Medieval extractive pit, which was probably dug for gravel, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1947. The site comprises an amorphous extractive pit that measures a maximum of 95m long by up to 56m wide and is orientated roughly south-west / north-east. The quarry was probably dug for gravel from the river terrace deposits, which are marked on the geology map at this location.

Full Description

A Post Medieval extractive pit, which was probably dug for gravel, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9394 1082 and comprises an amorphous extractive pit that measures a maximum of 86m long by up to 40m wide and is orientated roughly south-west / north-east. The quarry was probably dug for gravel from the river terrace deposits, which are marked on the geology map at this location. <1, 2, 3>

A possible post medieval extractive pit to the east of Manor Farm, Tarrant Hinton, is visible as an irregular semi-circular ditched earthwork on 1940s aerial photographs <1,2>. The feature measures roughly 95m long by 56m wide and is orientated southwest to northeast.

The feature is no longer visible on 2001 APGB imagery <4>. It was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
