Full Description

A possible later Prehistoric settlement site is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9370 1033 and comprises one triangular and one oval ditched enclosure. The triangular enclosure is centred at ST 9370 1034. It measures 35m along each side, has curved corners and a break or possible entrance to the south. It contains at least three small pits, each measuring circa 2m in diameter, which are probably domestic for storage or rubbish. The oval enclosure is situated 12m to its south, at ST 9371 1031, and measures 30m long by a maximum of 22m wide and is orientated north-west / south-east. The enclosures could perhaps be a later Prehistoric settlement. <1>

Two ditched enclosures and a linear ditched feature to the northwest of Tarrant Launceston are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs <3>. One of the enclosures is triangular in shape, roughly 31m by 37m in size. The second enclosure is located 10m south and is slightly oval in shape, with a broken segment to the northwest, and roughly 23m by 35m in size. A linear ditched trackway heads northwest from the enclosures towards an area of probable Iron Age/Roman settlement in the northwest corner of the same field (MDO43809).

The features may also represent an area of later prehistoric settlement, also probably Iron Age/Roman in date, with a potentially contemporary trackway, although this may be a later feature. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.
