Summary

A series of ditched linear features to the northwest and west of Tarrant Monkton, Tarrant Launceston, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The features are likely to be sections of a trackway of probable Iron Age/Roman date. The feature continues to the south where they link with further trackways, field systems and enclosures of potentially contemporary date. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.

Full Description

A probable later Prehistoric or Roman trackway is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The site is centred at ST 9415 0916 and comprises two parallel narrow ditches which are 12m apart and extend in an arc for 140m roughly north-east / south-west. The trackway is aligned to the south-west on a suggested trackway recorded as part of ST 90 NW 158 (UID: 1480998). <1, 3, 4>

A series of ditched linear fatures to the northwest and west of Tarrant Monkton, Tarrant Launceston, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs [1-4]. The features are likely to be sections of a trackway of probable Iron Age/Roman date. The features link with further trackways, field systems and enclosures of potentially contemporary date to the south. The northernmost feature is on the same SW-NE alignement as another similar feature to the northwest (MDO44554), recorded as a probable IA/RB cross dyke. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour AI&M project.
