Monument record MDO43749 - Boundary cross at Cross Pool

Please read our .

Summary

Site of Mediaeval wayside cross or boundary cross at Cross Pool. This was alleged to have been removed to the church. The so-called cross by the church porch (SZ09NE55) does not appear to be the same, since that appears to be a grave slab.

Full Description

A tradition exists that a cross formerly stood close by the roadside pool called Cross Pool. <1>.

The stone (near the Church Porch) "is said to have been brought from near Cross Pond, 1/2 mile north of the church, and perhaps marked a boundary of the Church Lands".<2>. <1-2>

(SZ 08779760) The site of Cross Pool was pointed out on the map by Mr. T. Dayrell-Reed. The pond is shown on the OS 6" 1940, but has now been completely filled and its site is grass covered. From the tradition it seems possibly a Medieval boundary (or wayside?) cross stood near the pond, but it seems unlikely that the `cross' by the church porch (dealt with on SZ 09 NE 55) is the one in question, for it appears to be a tomb slab and not a wayside or boundary cross. No other information upon this cross was obtained during field work in the area. <3>
