Summary

Two probable later prehistoric enclosures visible on air photographs. One is sub circular, with an area of 1 hectare, the other tombstone-shaped, has an area 0.4 ha, visible on air photographs among widespread pattern of ditches and boundaries visible as cropmarks.

Full Description

ST 876048 Two enclosures; one near circular, area 1 hectare, the other tombstone-shaped, area 0.4 ha, visible on air photographs among widespread pattern of local ditches contiguous with [ST 80 NE 118]. Faint on air photos. <1-2>

Both enclosures seen as cropmarks on 2007 aerial photography. The smaller tombstone shaped enclosure is located at ST 8777 0456. <3-4>.

The cropmark remains of the large sub-circular enclosure described above can be seen on aerial photographs taken in April 2015 as part of the Historic England Reconnaissance Recording Programme. The enclosure is located at c. ST 8763 0485 is defined by a single broad ditch, the course of which is slightly sinuous on the NW side. It measures approximately 120m in diameter. The cropmark (which is a germination mark with the bare soil visible) shows the interior of the enclosure as darker soil and slightly more advanced crop germination suggesting the soil within the enclosure is deeper or retaining more moisture. The enclosure is surrounded by the cropmarks of linear ditches from a network of former linear boundaries. <5>
