Full Description

Field Systems taken from air photographs. <1>

Centred at ST 84470832 (A) and ST 85050770 (B). Part visible on air photograph (RAF CPE/UK/2431/4329).

(A) An area partly under grass and partly rough pasture, with fairly pronounced field banks and lynchets.

(B) An area of pasture except for the extreme west, and which was under crops when investigated. There are fairly strong field banks and lynchets, the latter being irregular in size and direction. On the lower slopes of the valley the lynchets are particularly strong. The visible remains seem to be those of an Iron Age/Romano-British type field system. <2>

To W. of Knighton House (854081) on both sides of a dry valley are well-preserved remains of fifteen contour and cross-contour strip lynchets, up to 250 yds. long. The upper three strip lynchets on the S. side of the valley run up to the hill top and fan out; on the resulting wide treads is ridge-and-furrow, 5 yds. to 7 yds. wide. The S.W. part of this group overlies 'Celtic' fields. <3>
