Full Description

Bronze Flanged Axe, found 1920, in the garden of Cromwell Cottage. [Centred at SU 1207 1201]. (1)

[SU 12101205] The axe was found by my uncle, the late Mr B Hayter in 1911-13 while he was digging the garden. I gave it to the Morley Hewitt collection in Fordingbridge in 1949. I do not know the exact site. Nothing else has been found.
The area of the garden in which the axe could have been found as pointed out by Mrs Hayter extends for 55.0m North East to South West and 30.0m North West to South East. It is still cultivated. The axe was seen in the Morley Hewit collection. It has very slight flanges and no stop ridge - Early Bronze Age. (3)
