Full Description
The present parish of Milborne St Andrew covering 2600 acres was formerly divided into Milborne St Andrew and Milborne Stileham until they were joined in 1933. Milborne St Andrew. The original parish probably contained two distinct settlements in Milborne Deverel or Cary and Milborne St Andrew or Churchton (see earthworks at SY 89 NW 23) but these were abandoned, as habitation seemingly coalesced into the area of the present St Andrew village <2> (at SY 801975). Smaller settlements (see below) appear to have existed in the original parish but these have now become lost.
"Milborne Mamford or Mainford" was a manor in Milborne St Andrew, mentioned 1611, according to Hutchins but its location is unknown. It should perhaps be associated with Meleburneford mentioned under Milborne Stileham Milborne Michelston, mentioned 1316, 1544 and 1611 was "formerly a manor and hamlet" according to Hutchins. The location is unknown but it is perhaps to be associated with Michel's Farm, mentioned 1611, which was said to be in Milborne Mainford, Milborne Bek (see Stileham - SY 89 NW 64) and Milborne Deverel.
Milborne Symonderton, mentioned in 1288, 1315 and 1611 is unlocated but the affix is probably manorial from the personal name or surname 'Simon' (cf Symon Muleborne was a witness in a Dewlish charter). Beresford lists the "DMV of Milberne Symondeston at SY 802986" although there are no traces of settlement on air photographs (Authy 5) at this grid reference. He may have been referring to the settlement remains at SY 805984 (Milborne Deverel or Cary - SY 89 NW 63). Possible village desertion is also visible at 801973 -see SY 89 NW 67. <1-4>

‘(14) SETTLEMENT REMAINS (803975 and 803970), formerly part of Milborne Stileham village, lie on the E. side of the Milborne Brook and S. of, and within the E. part of the present village. The remains probably represent one of the two separate Milbornes listed in Domesday Book (Vol. I, f. 83a and 84b), which have gradually become one settlement. Only very disturbed and fragmentary closes bounded by low banks remain.’
