Full Description

Slaughter Gate: a spot traditionally associated with a battle between the Danes and Saxons. No earlier authority for its location can be found than the 1st edition OS 6" map which may derive its positioning from a fancied association with Longbury (ST 72 NE6). <2-3>

The name 'Slaughter Gate' remains in local usage (a); it applies to an area of pasture field centred around ST 7877 2724. The derivation of the name could not be accurately ascertained. <4>
