Full Description
The Abbey Barn. This was near a walled foot-walk called Ambrey Wall. The Barn was 250 ft. long and 32ft. wide, with two porches. Much of it was rebuilt in 1751. Stone from the Barn was used to build the parish church of St James ST 80 SW 53 (consecrated in 1786) and the Barn also furnished the timber for the church roof. <1>
ST 79960251. A mid-18th century plan positions and describes the Abbey Barn. It is however shown as being 155 ft. long and 42 ft. wide. No porches are portrayed, but 4 corner buttresses and six others down both the east and west sides. It is possible that the plan shows the barn after it had been to a large extent rebuilt in 1751. There are no visible remains of the building. <2>
