Full Description

Free chapel of Milton on Stour; value, grants etc. <1>

No evidence for the site of the chapel was obtained in Milton. Tithe Maps were not available. The modern church is situated well away from the nucleus of the village. <3>

Milton on Stour: surveyed in Domesday as Milton, the estate was given to Abbotsbury Abbey circa 17 Hen VI. There was a free chapel here; the founder and date of foundation are both unknown. In the time of Ed VI it was granted to Thos Bee and Richard Duke. In 1650 the impropriation belonged to the Dirdoes and was worth £30 pa, but the chapel was at that time decayed and disused. The list of Rectors covers the period between 1319 and 1539. <3>
