Traces of ridge-and-furrow, lying within fields which were enclosed from the waste occur around Lower Buckshow Farm where four irregularly-shaped fields contain rings 6-8 yards wide with headlands 8 yards wide. <1>

‘(19) Cultivation Remains. The date of enclosure of the open fields of Holwell is unknown. Field names on the Tithe Map of 1839 suggest former North, Brook, West and Birds Fields. … Traces of ridge-and-furrow, lying within fields which were enclosed from the 'waste', exist or can be seen on air photographs in a number of places, e.g. around Lower Buckshaw (680113– 682110), where four irregularly-shaped fields contain ridges 6 yds. to 8 yds. wide, with headlands 8 yds. wide.’
