Full Description

Alleged Medieval deer park at Stoke Wake. Two fields and a wood which are named on the Tithe Apportionment as "Great Park", "Horse Park" and "Cave & Park Coppices" appear to the west of the parish boundary and are in a topographically favourable position for a park. A reference in Hutchins to a former park at Stoke Wake in 1498, also gave evidence for the site to be included in the list of possible deer parks.

Examination of the area, however, revealed no supporting physical evidence, and the fact that the area lay within the confines of the Royal Forest of Blackmoor, at least until 1300, would seem to make the existence of a park at Stoke Wake unlikely. <1>
