Summary

The medieval settlement of Holwell was more extensive but shrank as population declined and new settlements developed elsewhere in the parish. Traces of house platforms and property boundaries can be seen as earthworks in adjacent fields to the north of the present settlement, known as The Borough.

Full Description

ST 699 119. The settlement of Holwell usually known as `The Borough,' lies on the Northern boundary of the parish. With the enclosures of the 16th century and late 18th century, and the creation of turnpikes to the South, the population declined as new settlements were created elsewhere in the parish. <1>
