Full Description

On the north side of the churchyard is the Well called St. Eustachius's well, to which saint the church (St Eustace's Church at ST 78940757) was also dedicated. It is also called Stachy's well, or the waterpond. <1>

At Ibberton is one of the very few wells dedicated in honour of St. Eustace. Probably the ascription here, as at Withersden (Withersdane, near Wye), Kent (see TR 04 NE 6) is to the 12th century Bishop of Flai and not the more celebrated Roman martyr. <3>

<1> Hutchins, J, 1863, The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset. Volume 2. 3rd edition, 361 (Monograph). SDO9443.

"On the north side of the churchyard breaks out of the rock a spring called St. Eustachius's well, to which saint the church (St Eustace's Church at ST 78940757) was perhaps dedicated. It is vulgarly called Stachy's well, or the waterpond. There is a path leading down to it from the church and it is secured with brickwork".
