Summary

Watermill set at right angles to the attached mill house, of medieval origin but mainly early eighteenth century with early nineteenth century extension and details. Brick walls of English bond, with cambered heads to the older openings. Tile roof, with stone slates to the lowest courses.

Full Description

Old Mill Tea Room, Corfe Mullen a two storeyed, 18th century building of brick with two bay windows to the ground floor. Grade 3. <3>

Mill House and Water Mill, Corfe Mullen. The late 18th century doorway. About 1830 the doorway and flanking casement windows were opened out and three-sided projecting window bays were added.

The early 19th century Mill stands at a right angle to the house. Earlier masonry, including an arch with keystone inscribed A C 1714, survives in the lower part of the west wall. The machinery has been removed. <4>

Corfe Mullen - The affix Mullen is from 'a mill', referring to the valuable mill here, which rendered 20 shillings in Domesday 1086. <5>

'(6) Mill House and Water Mill, 60 yds. W. of (4), are respectively of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The house front was originally symmetrical with a central doorway flanked by single casement windows with segmental-arched heads. The doorway and the W. window were opened out and three-sided projecting window bays added c. 1830. The Mill stands at a right angle to the house. Earlier masonry, including an arch with keystone inscribed AC 1714, remains in the lower part of the W. wall. The machinery has been removed.'
