Summary

: overarching record for unlocated burials from three, closely grouped barrows north of Monastery Farm. Grinsell's (1959, 106) East Lulworth barrows 3-5, also 5a-d. These barrows are located separately in the HER (MDOs7645-7) but are grouped in one record in the NRHE. Since it is not possible to link excavated evidence to individual barrows, they are also grouped here. The evidence is slightly confusing but the NRHE's interpretation is that one of the three barrows (unclear which) was opened in 1790 (Warne's barrow 13); all three were probably opened in 1825-3 (Warne's barrows 51-3).: burial 'in a rude cist of 'unhewn stones'. Contained an urn 'capable of holding 2 gallons, full of burnt bones and covered at the top with a thin flat stone'. The urn was of coarse black clay, potentially 'merely hardened by fire or the heat of the sun (1866, 11).: primary cremation burial in an urn with very few ashes in a central cist, covered by a small cairn of 'rude stones'. The urn is described as 'perfectly preserved' and was deposited in a 'leaning position', resting on a large flat stone and surrounded by a dome of upright stones. The latter were apparently 'brought from the seashore, as they were ... worn with small cavities by the action of the waves'. Within the urn, loose human bones mingled with a very small portion of ashes were found.: primary urned burial protected by a vault of large stones: primary urned burial in a smaller barrow than the others of this group, again protected by large stones
