Monument record MDO43287 - Maiden Castle #34c

<NRHE site description>: An unidentified round barrow excavated circa 1840 by J Sydenham. His barrow 8, it is listed by Grinsell as Winterborne St Martin 34c. Both Grinsell and RCHME suggest that it may be one of the barrows located just outside Maiden Castle, a little to the northwest (see SY 68 NE 30 and associated records). However, there were more barrows excavated in this area by Sydenham than are definitely known now, so identification is by no means certain. Sydenham described the monument as follows: "A barrow, close to [SY 68 NE 161] presented a plain interment of burnt bones on the centre of the floor. In the midst of the ashes were two bronze daggers...". This site was previously recorded as part of SY 68 NE 102. That record should be consulted for additional sources and information. <6>

Both Grinsell and RCHME suggest that it may be one of the barrows just outside and to the northwest of Maiden Castle (see SY 68 NE 30 and associated records). Sydenham described the monument as follows: "Another large barrow in the same group produced nothing but a single interment of burnt bones". The reference to a large barrow may indicate that he is referring to one of the other barrows slightly further afield (see SY 68 NE 26 and associated records). This barrow was originally recorded as part of SY 68 NE 102. That record should be consulted for additional sources and information. <7>
