Summary

: Group record for excavated but unlocated barrows, on the 'Lower Part of Milborne Down' listed in Grinsell (1959, 120 Barrows 16a-d; see also Warne barrows 22-5; Calkin 1967, 140). These could well correspond with barrows identified on Milborne Down in the HER (MDOs 4366-8 and 4365 (possibly also 4385)) and by the RCHM (1970, barrows 23-6) but it is not clear which finds came from which of these barrows and is unlikely to be determined. The grid reference provided for this record is a central point on the lower part of Milborne Down (and within the parish boundary).Only one barrow from this group produced grave goods:Grinsell's (1959, 120) Milborne barrow 16b/e: Primary cremation in urn; secondary crouched inhumation - unaccompanied. The urn is a Food Vessel-Collared Urn hybridNB Calkin (1967, 40) argues convincingly that Grinsell's Milborne barrows 16b and e are the same thing, hence the bodkin and amulet from 16e are included in this recordGrinsell's (1959, 120) Milborne barrow 16c (primary inhumation of adult placed on paved floor of barrow; apparently extended position - sandstone slabs. No grave goods but quite formal paved floor. Secondary infant inhumation accompanied by several already broken pot sherds. Antler found above burial in mound (antler picks)) is interesting to bear in mind but is not recorded here.
