Full Description
'There are twelve barrows. Two, unidentified, 'one on the downs and one on the heath', were opened in the 1800s. Both contained at least one inurned cremation, and from one came two urns, now in D.C.M. (Dorset Procs. XVII (1896), xxv-xxvi; XXIX (1908), 136-7; XXX (1909), xlviii.) (22) Bowl (?) (SY 78 SE; 77168142) on ridge top in S.E. of parish. Ploughed almost flat.' (1) (A _ SY 77178152; B - SY 77168142) Tumuli (NR) A. A grass covered bowl barrow 12.0m in diameter and 0.2m. high cut by modern vehicle ruts. B. A grass covered bowl barrow, 16.0m diameter and 0.4m high with no visible ditch. (2) A. Bowl barrow of which only a slight mound remains. B. Bowl barrow ploughed almost flat. (3,4)A. No visible remains - ploughed out. B. SY 77168142. Bowl barrow in arable, much ploughed. Diameter 14.0m., height 0.3m. No visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. (5)A circular mound, approximatley 13m in diameter, is still visible at this location as a cropmark on aerial photographs (6). It is considered likely to be the remains of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential barrows located in this vicinity (MDO1858-9 & MDO29301). This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). <1>
