Summary

: Overarching record representing unlocated burials from two of twelve round barrows within a diffuse cemetery excavated in 1894, some of which are represented by separate HER records (eg MDO1858-65; MDO29301). The grid reference given tallies with that from the equivalent NRHE record.Grinsell's (1959) Owermoigne barrows 11a and 11b. Two urns 'filled with ashes' were recovered from two barrows excavated on Cree's land: one on the heath, one on the downs (Cree 1909). The two 'repaired' urns - one barrel, one bucket, both knobbed - were presented by W. Cree to Dorset County Museum in 1894. The account from 1896 suggests that only one of the urns was associated with bones but this is impossible to verify.

Full Description

'There are twelve barrows. Two, unidentified, 'one on the downs and one on the heath', were opened in the 1800s. Both contained at least one inurned cremation, and from one came two urns, now in D.C.M. (Dorset Procs. XVII (1896), xxv-xxvi; XXIX (1908), 136-7; XXX (1909), xlviii.) (22) Bowl (?) (SY 78 SE; 77168142) on ridge top in S.E. of parish. Ploughed almost flat.' (1) (A _ SY 77178152; B - SY 77168142) Tumuli (NR) A. A grass covered bowl barrow 12.0m in diameter and 0.2m. high cut by modern vehicle ruts. B. A grass covered bowl barrow, 16.0m diameter and 0.4m high with no visible ditch. (2) A. Bowl barrow of which only a slight mound remains. B. Bowl barrow ploughed almost flat. (3,4)A. No visible remains - ploughed out. B. SY 77168142. Bowl barrow in arable, much ploughed. Diameter 14.0m., height 0.3m. No visible ditch. Re-surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. (5)A circular mound, approximatley 13m in diameter, is still visible at this location as a cropmark on aerial photographs (6). It is considered likely to be the remains of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential barrows located in this vicinity (MDO1858-9 & MDO29301). This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). <1>
