Monument record MDO43229 - Brick and tile works south of the Kennels, Brownsea Island, Studland

Please read our .

Summary

Excavations in 2005 by National Trust staff and volunteers of an industrial site exposed by cliff erosion revealed at least three phases of industrial activity. A hollow track with brick and gravel surface cut through a pit cut into the clay which was thought likely to relate to a brickworks shown on Isaac Taylor's map of Brownsea dated 1770. Excavations also revealed industrial activity pre-dating 1770 and probably of early 18th-century date.
