Monument record MDO43228 - Brick and tile works south of Rose Cottage, Brownsea Island, Studland

Please read our .

Summary

A kiln exposed by coastal erosion was excavated by National Trust staff and volunteers in 2005. This revealed the kiln to be part of a larger group including three kilns and a brick-lined pit or tank. Excavated debris included orange-red, thin hand-made bricks of a type found at Corfe Castle and manufactured before the slighting of the castle in 1646. Waste included clay roof tiles and lumps of lime, suggesting these were also manufactured at this site.
