Summary

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photograph on North Field Hill, Sydling St Nicholas. The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although the earthworks may alternatively be older, possibly associated with an extensive prehistoric field system (MDO2620). The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photograph on North Field Hill, Sydling St Nicholas (1). The features comprise several broad parallel linear ridges on an east-west alignment set between broad linear banks on a north-south alignment, associated with an extensive prehistoric field system (MDO2620). The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow, although an older origin is possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

The features are no longer visible on Google Earth imagery.
