Summary

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photograph on North Field Hill, Sydling St Nicholas. The features may be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although a medieval origin is also possible. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description

An area of ridged and ditched cultivation is visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photograph on North Field Hill, Sydling St Nicholas (1). The features comprise of narrow, slightly curvilinear, ridges under 2m in width. They are contained by and possibly respect linear banked earthworks that may be part of an older, potetnially prehistoric, field system (MDO2620). The features may be those of post medieval narrow ridge and furrow, although a medieval origin is also possible. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

The features are still visible on Google Earth imagery.
