Monument record MDO43087 - Possible medieval ridge and furrow, Seldon Hill, Up Cerne

An area of possible ridged and ditched cultivation marks are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs on Seldon Hill, Up Cerne. The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow but could alternatively be earthworks associated with a late prehistoric enclosed field system (MDO2812) within which the features are located. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

An area of possible ridged and ditched cultivation marks are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs on Seldon Hill, Up Cerne (1). The features comprise faint parallel linear banked earthworks on a broadly N-S axis. They cover an area of approximately 10m by 50m and are bounded on the west side by a linear boundary earthwork probably associated with a late prehistoric enclosed field system (MDO2812) within which the features are located. To the north and east the features are bounded by historic field boundaries of medieval to post medieval date. The features may be those of medieval ridge and furrow but could alternatively be earthworks associated with the field system MDO2812. They were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

The features are no longer visible on current Google Earth imagery.
